"The Heart of the Blue Ridge"

Editor's Note: Introducing the Books of Hazel P. Hedrick

Not long after The Mountain Laurel started, I received a letter from a lady that I would soon come to know and love - Hazel Hedrick. I had written a small piece for the paper titled, "Do You Remember." In it I just listed a lot of things like the smell of an oilcloth tablecloth, or heating a rock to use as a bed warmer in a day and age when bedrooms weren't heated. Hazel got a copy of that paper and wrote me back to me with a list of things she remembered also. It was so good, I wrote back and asked her if I could print it.

Thus started a long friendship and correspondence and a writing career for Hazel. Soon she was writing great stories about her childhood, growing up in the John Hayes Hollow in the Brushy Mountains of North Carolina. One thing led to another and in 1988, Hazel published her first book, The Talking Hills. Today, Hazel has published two other books and will soon have a fourth one. I have listed the books below. They may be ordered directly from Hazel at the address below. Be sure to mention if you wish Hazel to sign the books.
