A suspension bridge over Big Reed Island Creek in Carroll County,
Virginia. Big Reed Island is a favorite "old swimming hole" (at Cox's Landing)
for local residents and one of the best spots in the Blue Ridge for a leisurely day of
tubing. |
Wyrick Spring as it looks today.
In the past, Wyrick Spring was a Wythe County, Virginia landmark spa, which included a
hotel and bathing huts. The waters were said to be medicinal and many people came to
"take the cure." |

A view of Burkes Garden, Virginia. Burkes Garden history goes back to
pre-Revolutionary War times when a man named Burke came through and camped here. A year
later he came back and at the place he camped and threw out potato peelings, there were
potatos growing. Thus the name, Burkes Garden. |
A view of the dam at the lower end of Burkes Garden. This place was the
site of the latest "Lassie" movie. A small community of Amish live here and sell
baked goods to visitors.
Burkes Garden is one of the most remote and picturesque places in Virginia. It has a
post office, one convenience store and no service stations. It is completely ringed by
mountain ridges. |
