"The Heart of the Blue Ridge"

The Photos...

Coy Oliver Yeatts, an original, true mountain man. His knowledge of these mountains was as boundless as his courage and sense of humor. Read about a visit with Mr. Will Barnard and Mr. Coy. Read a eulogy written when Mr. Coy died, entitled, The Mayberry Willows Weep.
Miss Addie Wood, a lifelong resident of the community of Mayberry, Virginia, right down the Blue Ridge Parkway from Meadows of Dan (Virginia Route 58). Miss Addie was the proprietor of Mayberry Trading Post for many years, and only retired in her 90's. Her niece Dale Yeatts and Dale's husband Coy Lee now operate the store. See their photos below. Read the history of Mayberry Trading Post
Don Brady picking a banjo at the grand opening of Nester's Store at Laurel Fork, Virginia. Don is a member of the musical Brady family that included Raif, winner of the 2nd Old time Fiddler's Convention in Galax, Virginia. Many families in the Blue Ridge played musical instruments and carried them with them everywhere they went, in hopes of doing a little picking with friends and neighbors.
A Blue Ridge Attraction ...
Backroad Tours pass dilapidated old cabins, long abandoned grist mills, quaint shops, and museums - all amid glorious scenery. They provide days of delight for those attracted by a quiet glade, a bubbling brook or a view that takes your breath.
Henry Harris, horse trader, coal miner and fantastic story teller. Starting when he was 12 years old leaving for a mining camp in West Virginia, his life story is just as big and fascinating as his stories. Read about his life.
Mayberry Presbyterian Church, right up the road from Mayberry Trading Post. This church was one of the rock churches built by Reverend Bob Childress. Take a tour.
A photo from Ferrum College's Blue Ridge Institute collection. The Blue Ridge Institute is the official Virginia State center for Blue Ridge Culture. They have a farm museum and their recordings have been nominated for Grammy Awards. Visit their site.
Dale Yeatts and her husband, Coy Lee, are the proprietors of Mayberry Trading Post, where they worked for years with Dale's aunt, Miss Addie Wood. Without Dale and Coy Lee, and Miss Addie before them, the tiny mountain community of Mayberry would have long since faded from memory. By continuing to operate Mayberry Trading Post, the last remaining business in Mayberry, they are preserving the memories of this once thriving mountain community. Coy Lee Yeatts, is the son of Coy Oliver Yeatts and the husband of Dale Yeatts. Together he and Dale are continuing to operate Mayberry Trading Post in Mayberry, Virginia. Mayberry is located between Blue Ridge Parkway Mileposts 181 and 182 near Meadows of Dan, Virginia and just south on the Parkway from Mabry Mill. Like his father before him, Coy Lee is a big bear of a man blessed with a tender heart, a lovable nature and unforgettable character.
