Thistle Cove Farm's Appalachian Heritage Festival

"If It's Not Handmade, One At A Time, You Won't Find It Here!"

According to Sandra Bennett of Thistle Cove Farm, last year the Appalachian Heritage Festival  had 30+ vendors and 700-800 visitors from 7 states and the District of Columbia. This year even more vendors and visitors are expected to attend. The Festival features crafts and antiques that would have been made and used 150 years ago. Crafters demonstrate, and sell, everything from split oak baskets too quilts. Last year the woodworker made a grain shovel from a single piece of popular, watch a blacksmith at his forge, a leatherworker shows off his hand tooled leather saddles, spinners turn wool into yarn, weavers make scarves, a woman hooks rugs while another knits a pair of socks. Someone else carves walking sticks and dolls show off their handmade clothes. There's handmade pottery, hand knitted scarves and lots more  for sale!

If you're hungry, eat some brown beans and cornbread cooked over a pit fire or have a hot yeast donut. There are other festival foods as well (hamburgers, hot dogs, etc.). If you grow weary, sit a spell on a straw bale and listen to the old time bluegrass sounds of Smokey's Mountain Boys or take a turn down the valley on a wagon. The children will enjoy riding the ponies or helping press apples on an antique apple press.

Photo opportunities abound at every turn on this working horse and sheep farm. It's a day for the memory book and to restore a little sanity to harried lives. Slow down a bit and enjoy listening to the sounds of the day and the animals; reflect on how your grandparents lived.
