Art In The Park At Blowing Rock

By Blowing Rock Chamber Of Commerce

Issue: July, 1987

The "Art in the Park" series of juried arts and crafts shows sponsored by the Blowing Rock Chamber of Commerce, will be held in the town park on Main St. in Blowing Rock, North Carolina.

Shows on tap throughout the 1987 season: June 27, July 18, August 15, September 5, and October 3. All are on Saturday. The show goes on, rain or shine.

"This year we have a particularly outstanding group of exhibitors. We're working with nearly 250 artists and crafters whose work has passed a jury committee's scrutiny. There will be 120 exhibitors at each show many of them demonstrating their work," Dixie Hoffland at the Chamber of Commerce said.

"Art in the Park" is celebrating its 21st birthday of bringing fine artists and crafters from all over the East Coast to Blowing Rock.

"We'll have everything from glass blowing to blacksmithing, English smocking to German pepper cutting and hundreds of other intriguing hand crafted items will be shown. You'll also see cuddly teddy bears, hand loomed clothing, art deco ceramics, dramatic jewelry, country decorator items, three dimensional stained glass and lots, more," Hoffland said.

Many award winners from past years will be exhibiting again this year such as quilter, Betty Fain and Ed Fields who will demonstrate his split oak basket technique.

New corners include the Lowerys who will demonstrate chinoiserie, a Chinese technique of decorating furniture with gold leaf. Several of their chairs were chosen to be placed in the American Embassy in London.

Danny and Mundina O'Driscoll are also new to the shows. Danny is the South Carolina Wildlife Artist of the Year and Mundina won first place in the Spoleto Art show in 1986.

At each event cash awards for "Best in Show" in two dimension, "Best in Show" in three dimension and several honorable mentions will be announced at noon. This year a cash award for the best booth display will also be given.
