Genealogy - March, 1987

Issue: March, 1987

[Dear Editor;]
I just this morning read of your paper in the El Paso Times Genealogy Column. I have been doing research on the Dalton family of Carroll County, Virginia using the local Latter Day Saints library. I would appreciate knowing if any of your readers are researching the same family.

I have John Alderman's first book on Carroll County with his reference to William Dalton and his decedents (of whom my husband is one). Now I am trying to go backward from William Dalton and trying to do it from the "Great Southwest" gets complicated. Any assistance you could give me would be appreciated.

[Dear Editor;]
I would like any information on my great grandparents, James and Elizabeth Hagy Dunford. They were married in 1835 in Grayson County. I have evidence that they lived before coming to Tazewell County in Wythe County, Virginia, near John Dunford who some thought was his father. He settled on the South fork of Tug River near the head which is now McDowell, West Virginia.

Also Hezekah Adam Harman who came from Germany and settled on New River (Giles County, VA. now) about 1745. His family traveled to Old Salem, N.C. to church service (Moravian). Evidently had relatives there, also some married there. His sons were pioneers in Tazewell County and Bland, Va. Mathais founded Harmans Station in eastern Kentucky. He settled permanently in Tazewell County in 1802. He was my maternal four times great grandfather.

[Dear Editor;]
I really enjoy reading your paper. I sent you a letter on tracing my father's family history. I received a letter from a man in Ridgeway, Virginia after that. I found out that President Thomas Jefferson's grandfather was my eighth great-grandfather. I would like for you to print a letter for me. I would like to have some information on my other grandparents. They were:

James Solomon Sumner married Elizabeth Williams. They were from the Woodlawn area of Carroll County, Virginia. He had one brother I know of, John Sumner. I do not know any more than that.
