Lost Silver Mine

By Bobbie Bowman Clement © 1984

Issue: October, 1984

I enjoyed reading about the Lost Silver mine near the Pinnacles of Dan in the Dan River Gorge. An uncle told me about it several years ago. He said he had been to see the place and if he had better eyesight, he could take me there. He said a slave's daughter told him her mother cooked for the men or people that worked in the mine. They were chained and not allowed outside of the mine. If she told anyone about it, she would be killed. The government got to snooping and they closed the mine with the workers in it and changed the course of the river to hide it. He was the only person I have heard talk about the mine.
