The First Kiss

By Gayle G. Lin © 1988

Issue: November, 1988

Shyly he stood on the country lane,
Bare toes kicking the sand.
Coyly she smiled, gazed up at him
And offered him her hand.

From his overalls pocket he pulled out his knife
And carved on the big oak tree
A message anyone passing by
In years to come could see

"Lester loves Jenny" his words proclaimed,
Encircled with a heart.
Youthful vows and promises made,
Saying they'd never part.

They came together, fingers entwined
Denim lad and calico miss;
"Soft and warm like a biscuit"
Is how he described their first kiss.
